What are travel expectations and details for those coming from America?
For those traveling from America to our wedding in Germany, we thank you in advance for joining us!
We ask that you book your individual travel & flights to and from Ludinghausen.
**We may be able to pick you up/drop you off from either Airport! Please send travel details to Bridget/Christoph once booked!
Flights:
We recommend booking flights to & from:
1) Duesseldorf Airport (1+ hour drive to Ludinghausen); Address: Flughafenstraße 105, 40474 Düsseldorf, Germany
2) Frankfurt Airport (3.5 hours drive to Ludinghausen; or we recommend taking the Train (it's fun!) from Frankfurt Airport to Dülmen.
Please note for Passports/Immigration: be prepared to wait in long lines to enter Germany, or in connecting countries (use the bathroom after exiting plane); do NOT use your phones in line; Passport Control Security will most likely talk to you in English & typically will ask you 'how long you are staying?' & 'why are you visiting?' - you can say you are visiting as a tourist for a wedding (it would not hurt to have your wedding invitation on hand).
Please note for the Train: trains leave on the exact minute scheduled and doors close quickly; you must have your ticket at all times: train conductors will check your tickets; there will be multiple stops - double check, listen carefully & pay attention to getting to Dülmen! From Dülmen train station, we can plan to pick you up by car or family/friends in Ludinghausen may be assisting us with pick-ups too!
What are travel tips for guests coming from USA?
1) Passport/IDs: Make sure you have a valid passport, IDs (including Real ID etc.) for traveling, obviously! Always good to check TSA.gov for travel info too!
2) Booking Travel: While we wish we had a magical complimentary travel agent, you are responsible for booking your flights & transportation to and from the wedding. **Feel free to check in with Christoph or Bridget before booking travel & for any questions you may have. Also refer to other FAQs!
3) Cell Phones: Being in a foreign country, make sure your cell phones have international service (you may need to contact your phone provider to select an international plan), or you will need WiFi options at all times & you can download the free app WhatsApp for calls/texts with us or fellow guests. Also make sure you have your phone charger, portable chargers etc. that plug in successfully to European-style outlets!
4) Car Rentals: if you plan to rent your own car & travel individually, we do recommend your vehicle has a built-in GPS system to get around more easily.
5) Driving Around Germany: Be sure & research the country you are visiting, especially if you've never been before! Be aware of any restrictions, policies, laws etc. For example, when driving on German highways, the 'Autobahn' highway system is no joke! Luckily, cars drive on the same sides of the road as America, but if you're driving yourselves, we recommend staying in the right lane & driving safely. Please note - German roads and highways have a significant amount of cameras for monitoring driving. If you go even 1 KM over the designated speed limit, your vehicle license plate will have a photo taken & a bill sent in the mail accordingly!
6) Safety: When traveling internationally, it is always best to submit a travel update to your banks so they are aware; let friends/family know your locations & places you are staying; when carrying cash: purchase safety belts, fanny packs, and crossbody bags. Research safety tips for traveling abroad & be sure to have necessary phones/chargers, IDs, emergency cash, medicine, prescriptions etc. ready to go. And importantly, be respectful & courteous to the German police (Polizei) and German locals!
What should I pack for traveling?
Anything & everything you might need for a destination wedding and traveling internationally! But here are a few suggestions: passport; IDs; cash: USD & Euros (you can order Euros in advance from your bank; or there are ATMs - fees may be less from ATMs once in Germany); credit cards; medicine/prescriptions/vitamins (extra if needed); extra set of clothes (for your carry-ons in case of lost luggage); toiletries; cell phone chargers; cameras & batteries; European outlet adapters (outlets are very different from USA); first aid travel kit; masks/disinfectant wipes as needed; paper fans or mini electronic fans (in case of hot weather); layers of clothing: Germany may be hot during the day & cool at night during June; bug spray/sunscreen; comfortable walking shoes. Of course, let Christoph or Bridget know of any questions! :)
What are other things I should know for traveling from USA to Germany?
There are cultural differences between America & Germany (of course!). If you've never traveled internationally, or to Germany, it might be a good idea to do some research - such as on customs, culture, food, shopping, German news. A few general tips: be respectful & polite to German locals; many Germans speak English - feel free to try and communicate in English!; otherwise, invest in a pocket translator, English-German book or again have your phone ready with internet to use Google translate; if someone speaks to you immediately in German, you can also say "English" or "Ich spreche kein Deutsch". When in doubt, stick with: Hallo (Hello); Danke (Thank You); Bitte (Please); Tschüss (Bye, See You Later - used a lot!). Germans are friendly: smile and say hi! :) And as always when traveling: try to get extra sleep before traveling; research time changes; take Vitamin C & stay hydrated in advance; drink & brush teeth with bottled water when traveling and at hotels; be on alert for emergencies and soak in a new and exciting culture!
